What is Sade Satti & Mangal Dosha or Manglik

Sade Sati
Sade Sati is a very horrible word for general people. It strikes great fear in many hearts when they listen about sade sati of planet Shani popularly known as Shani Maharaj. More recently a group of Astrologers have started harvesting by fear causing tactics. I do understand the potential negative outcome of sade sati and do not want to minimize its bad influence while explaining any such chart but at the same time it is irresponsible attitude if it is not told to client that effects are conditional and does not apply on all charts uniformly. I am also not in favour of sugar coating its negative influence. So a rational and balanced approach is required.

What is Sade Sati
When, Saturn transits through the 12th, 1st, and 2nd house from the natal moon (where one’s Moon is placed in the birth chart), this is termed Sade sati. Saturn takes 2 ½ years to pass through each sign (30 years to make one round of the zodiac), its passing through 3 signs make it 7 ½ years. Sade means “half” and Sati translates to “seven” and hence the name Sade Sati. There is a general belief that Sade Sati period brings dissatisfaction, disappointments, depression, differences, disputes, disharmony and undesirable results, but actually this is not the case. Saturn does not always behave this way and it really depends on individual’s chart. If Saturn happens to be a yogakaraka in the horoscope and involved in good yogas then the transits are not as bad and vice versa. This is also dependant on the Astakavarga strength of a sign. If in the sarvastakavarga, the number of dots are lesser than optimum and/ or in Saturn’s astakavarga the dots are lesser than 4, the period becomes tough. Most of the people go through 2-3 periods of Sade Sati in their life time, 4 periods are very rare.

Sade Satti Influence
While it is true that during this 7-1/2 years Saturn transit period people do experience some tensions and troubles, it is nothing to be scared about. Even while giving some troubles and tensions, it does not deny you success. As a matter of fact a number of people prosper to new heights during this period. Sade sati is about doing one’s obligatory duties without considering likes and dislikes. One who does this forever is least effected by Sade Sati and in fact gains during this period. However if anyone is arrogant, egoistic, unsympathetic, and non-hard working then he is targeted during the person’s Sade Sati and can make him go through a lot of hardships. When I suggested one of my clients to observe humanitarian attitude towards workers and refrain from socially immoral acts in the wake of incoming sade sati, he could not resist himself in following all his old habits. He suffered a lot on account of sade sati. Moreover, he blamed me and Astrology for not getting any relief in sade sati. Mind it, if you follow social and moral norms, your suffering will be minimum.

Three Cycles of Sade Sati
First cycle of Sade-sati generally affects close relatives more than the native. The 2nd cycle influences the domestic front as well as the business front, and the 3rd cycle affects children, family, health, and physical suffering or may even indicate the death of the native or near death situation.

1st Cycle: In the first cycle, when Saturn transits 12th house from moon for 2 and a half years, the evil results are felt by the parents and near relations of the native. The health of grandmother can be affected and may result in her death. The eyesight of the native can be affected necessitating the use of spectacles. Saturn here creates extra expenditure.

The position of Saturn may affect the financial position. As Saturn aspects second house, it may retard environmental activities. If in a birth chart, Saturn is passing through the last phase of life, it may force native to get renunciation. In addition to the above during this period, the father of native may have set back or reversal, loss etc. in his profession and will lead to an extra, unwanted and uncalled for expenditure which may become unbearable for the native.

2nd Cycle: During this cycle, Saturn transits the moon sign for 2 ½ years. During this period, it affects the native himself in domestic and professional fields. It also denotes ill health and death of some relations, fear from enemies, journey to distant places and separation from relations like brothers, sisters, wife or family etc. It may cause imprisonment, miseries, loss of wealth, fatigue and general debility, loss of friends, obstructions and delay in undertakings, failure in attempts and increased expenditure.

3rd Cycle: When Saturn transits in 2nd house from Moon, third cycle of Sade Sati starts. It affects one?s health; children and it may even cause death if it comes late in life. During this transit, loss of health, happiness, loss of position, increased expenditure, financial stress and physical weakness might be felt. If there is any gain of wealth from others, then the same will be lost, and one can also get deception through wicked men. May cause death of children too if other combinations are present to confirm the same.

Mangal Dosha or Manglik Dosha
In India, lot of importance in Kundali (horoscope) Matching is given to Mangal Dosha, Kuja Dosha, Kuja Dosham, Manglik Dosha, Manglika Dosha, in these days. People it seems panic so much from this dosha that they just pay attention to only Mangal Dosha and not anything else in the Horoscope Matching.

Mangal or Mars
Mangal (Angaraka or Kuja) is one of the Navagraha planets in Vedic astrology and represents courage, strength, power, and aggression. Mangal or Kuja is celibate and is regarded as the ?God of War? and also a teacher of the Ruchaka Mahapurusha Yoga (Occult Science). Mangal rules over the signs Mesha (Aries) and Vrishchika (Scorpio). Sun, Moon and Jupiter are the planets which are considered friendly to him. A positive influence of Angaraka (Mars) can give a person energy, strong will, independence and self confidence.

What is Mangal Dosha
So what actually is Mangal Dosha, why so much fear and worry about it? When Mangal is in the Ascendant (first house) or in the fourth, seventh, eighth or twelfth house, Mangal Dosha is formed. As per Dev Karalam (South Indian treatise on astrology) when Mangal is in the second house then also Mangal Dosha is formed.

Mangal in these houses aspects the seventh house of matrimony and the eighth house of longevity and sexual activity in the married life. Mangal, being a natural malefic and a hot planet of anger and temper, its aspect or placements in these houses influences the following:

In the ascendant, it gives a hot temperament and aspects the seventh and the eighth house, which hurts the matrimony.

In the second house, Mars gives temperamental speech and as it aspects the seventh and the eighth houses, it again hurts the matrimonial home, through speech.

In the fourth house, Mars gives hurt emotions and as it aspects the seventh house, ones influence of hurt emotions and feelings will hamper the marriage.

In the seventh house, the partner will also be hot tempered and as his Mars aspects the ascendant, the person himself or herself will be temperamental so sparks are deemed to fly everywhere in the married life.

In the eighth house, Mangal destroys the longevity of self and with its aspect to the second house, creates hot speech, influencing marital harmony.

In the twelfth house, Mangal will aspect the seventh house and as it is in the twelfth house of bed comforts, one may be highly active in sexual activity and hamper the marriage home due to frivolous sexual demands and activity.

Cancellation Of Mangalik Dosha
Before assuming that your Kundali is Manglik get it verified by an expert Astrologer . There are many situations where the mangal dosha gets cancelled. Given below are some cases where Mars even if it is in 2nd, 12th, 4th, 7th or 8th house the manglik dosha gets cancelled: –

When Mars is in its own sign or in the houses owned by his friends manglik dosha gets cancelled.
If Mars is in the 2nd house but in Virgo, Gemini sign no dosha.
If Mars is in 12th house but in Taurus, Libra no dosha.
If Mars is in 7th house but in Cancer, Capricorn no dosha.
If Mars is in 8th house but in Sagittarius, Pisces no dosha.
For Cancer and Leo ascendant Mars is a yogakaraka wherever it may be no dosha at all.
For Aquarius ascendant Mars in the 4th/8th house no dosha.
If benefic Jupiter or Venus is in ascendant no dosha.
If Mars is in conjunction or aspected by Jupiter or Moon no dosha.
If Mars is in conjunction/aspected by Sun, Mercury, Saturn, Rahu no dosha.

After cross checking all these above points and issues, should one responsibly say whether the client has a Mangal or Kuja Dosha or not.

If one finds that definitely there is Mangal/Kuja Dosha in the horoscope, then Mangal Dosha Shanti should be done by a competent Brahmin. In such cases, never try to save some small money by performing the Mangal Dosha Puja or Shanti on one?s own, as in the current life styles the laid Vedic Principles cannot be followed to propitiate planets.

Some Myths

1. A Manglik has to marry a Manglik only or otherwise the spouse dies.
Answer: If a person has to die after marriage it will be due to the influence of his own planets and not due to wrong placement of Mars in his spouse?s horoscope. The death inflicting tendencies will be in the natives own chart. The matching of chart has to be done correctly to check the probability of this occurrence.

2. A person can be a Double/Triple/Quadric Manglik.
Answer: Double Manglik is also an imaginative prospective coined by greedy astrologers. Ketu, who intrinsically is like Mangal can have the potential to make a person double manglik but even here its placement in the house has to be properly studied, as it behaves and results in the manner of the lord of the house where it is placed. Triple and quadric manglik is a non existent thing in Vedic Astrology.

7. Presence of Mangal in 1/2/4/7/8/12 houses from Ascendant makes one Manglik.

Mangal or Mars is intrinsically a cruel planet but it also represents for vigour, vitality, energy etc in ones horoscope. In a female horoscope it is the karaka of the menstrual cycle.

Mangal has the lordship of two Rashis namely Aries or Mesha and Vrishchikka or Scorpio and they are the 1st and 8th respectively a combination which is not considered good in Vedic Astrology.

Mangal, in addition to where placed, influences other houses through its aspect( Dristhi) as well and those are the forth , seventh and eighth from it placement.

As intrinsically it is a cruel or not forgiving planet its placement in certain houses was not considered good and the native was termed as Manglik even if the planet was considered good for the horoscope due to its lordship.

This Manglik term has been coined in modern times and there is no mention of this Dosha in our ancient texts. This clearly shows that this Dosha was seen at par with other Dosha and was not hyped as it has been done in the modern times.

The present day Astrologers term a native Manglik when Mars is placed in 1,2,4,7,8,or 12th house from the ascendant and to make the matter even worse some astrologer even see it from the lunar chart.

Let us shed away all the fears Mars carries on its shoulders.

5. If a person happens to be a Manglik then he remains so and it does not get washes away at any age.
6. Mangal is in no way responsible for your late marriage. If it has happened there is some other combination which has failed to attract you and your astrologers.
7. Mangal influences three houses in addition the house where it placed and if we will find that if Mangal is situated in other house than the manglik houses then also it will put a considerable effect on the manglik houses. For example if Mangal is placed in ninth house of the horoscope of an individual, then it will be spoiling the 12th and 4th house by forth aspect and 8th aspect respectively. Therefore placement of Mangal in ninth can also be described as a Manglik position, like wise other non-manglik position can bring the same results. That means we all have misunderstood the concept of Mangal and created a thumb rule to describe the ill effects of Mangal for those people who do not wish to understand the basic concept. Without understanding its placements, its constellation and other finer points no one can be described as a Manglik.
8. Mangal Dosha is never ever seen from the lunar chart. If we combine both, no one in this world shall be a non ?manglik.
9. There are various methods propagated in Vedic Astrology, which can lessen the effect of Mangal Dosha, but the correct method should be chosen with caution, only after a good verification of Horoscope /kundli or otherwise the effects may not be lasting.
10. Never ever pack off your non- Maglik daughter to a man who is a proven Manglik without making their charts match as it can fetch long lasting effects.
